Neuronal identity and hybrid coding
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent studies of the olfactory system report that differentiated sensory neurons have an identity evidenced by surface markers. These markers relate to the specificity of the neuron's odorant receptor. During axonal outgrowth the markers co-determine, with which of the second stage neurons synapses are formed. The markers and the resulting connectivity (or network structure) amount to static, contextual information about the what and where of a firststage neuronal message. This static information, long-sought by Radical Constructivism, complements the rapidly variable information carried by the spike pattern of single fibres. Thus neural coding is hybrid: in first-stage neurons stimulus intensity is encoded by spike pattern and contextual what and where by molecular markers decisive for neuronal connectivity. Based on this connectivity, the answer to the contextual question what odorant? is found by pattern analysis across the population of first-stage neurons.

A Putative Model of Transformative Teaching Self
Reconciliating the logics of Post-method Era, Critical Pedagogy, and Sociocultural Theory in its conceptual framework, this study postulated Iranian EFL teachers’ socio-pedagogical identity as comprising conformity, criticality, and conformity-criticality mediation in order to explore and model the different aspects of Iranian EFL teachers’ “transformative teaching self,” probably contributing ...
متن کاملNorm-Based Coding of Voice Identity in Human Auditory Cortex
Listeners exploit small interindividual variations around a generic acoustical structure to discriminate and identify individuals from their voice-a key requirement for social interactions. The human brain contains temporal voice areas (TVA) involved in an acoustic-based representation of voice identity, but the underlying coding mechanisms remain unknown. Indirect evidence suggests that identi...
متن کاملRegion Based Hybrid Wavelet Coding of Passport Photographs
This paper deals with an image compression system for head and shoulder images which are used in photo identity cards for personal identification. The proposed Region Based Hybrid Wavelet Coding (RBHWC) method splits the images into four regions depending on their importance in recognition. Applying different wavelets and coding methods for different regions, it is possible to achieve good comp...
متن کاملFragmented, Hybrid, and Diasporic Identities in Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia
The processes of cultural transformation in Britain in the second half of the 20th century, the fall of the Empire, immigration from former colonies and the expansion of the multiculturalism, have influenced new ways of looking at the conceptions of identity of diasporic subjects within Britain. Examining these experiences, diasporic novelists write about the second generation immigrants in con...
متن کاملHybrid Regenerating Codes for Distributed Storage Systems
Distributed storage systems are mainly justified due to their ability to store data reliably over some unreliable nodes such that the system can have long term durability. Recently, regenerating codes are proposed to make a balance between the repair bandwidth and the storage capacity per node. This is achieved through using the notion of network coding approach. In this paper, a new variation ...
